Eating Out with Joseph

March 6, 2013

We don’t eat out very often. It’s just easier to meet Joseph’s needs when I cook. However there are times of celebration or vacation where we end up in a restaurant. So far we’ve had pretty good experiences with it, especially now that his reactions aren’t as sensitive as they used to be. Waitors and waitresses have been understanding when we ask for substitutes. So far, though, the best odds we’ve had of Joseph actually eating the food have been when we give him french fries or bacon (from a diner).

It has been fun to laugh at some of the gluten-free menus that some restaurants have. Arby’s for example, pretty much only has condiments available that are gluten-free. Joseph hasn’t been too keen on gluten-free pasta at Olive Garden. Our favorite sit-down restaurant to go to that is Joseph friendly is Red Robin. He loves there fries, and last time, actually ate some of the chicken on a stick we ordered for him.

What experiences have you had with eating out with food allergies?

I love red robin too because many locations have a dedicated fryer, so they’re gluten free!

my family never stopped eating out because of my allergies as a kid, so i think that helpedme have less fear about it. I’ve really only had a couple BAD experiences, and it was people’s attitudes, rather than me having a reaction.
