Strawberry Shake Trial: Dairy-free, Gluten-free, Nut-free

May 11, 2012

When I was in highschool, my favorite thing to do was to go to Burgerville and get a fresh strawberry milkshake. They were definitely the best shakes ever. Now I’m sad because 1 – there are no Burgervilles near Seattle, and 2 – even if there were, Joseph wouldn’t be able to eat the shakes. So, with strawberry season upon us, I decided to try to make a Joseph-safe shake. To do so, I used a recipe at The Kitchn for guidance.

The Changes

To make it Joseph-safe, I substituted coconut milk and rice milk ice-cream for the milk and ice-cream. I also used vanilla ice-cream instead of strawberry ice-cream, since they didn’t have a dairy-free strawberry ice-cream in the store (plus, Burgerville uses vanilla soft serve ice cream in their shakes, and that was what I was going for). I also left out the optional malted milk powder. And to save time, I decided not to pre-freeze the strawberries.

The Method

Place strawberries, milk, sugar, and vanilla in a blender. Puree until smooth.

Add the ice cream and puree, stopping periodically to push the ice-cream down by hand. Pour into glasses and serve immediately.

Strawberry Shake

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound strawberries, hulled and halved
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup coconut milk
  • 1 pint vanilla rice-milk ice-cream

In a blender, puree strawberries, sugar, vanilla, and coconut milk until smooth. Add ice-cream and puree, stopping occasionally to push the ice-cream down by hand. Serve immediately.

What I Thought

We all liked it. Joseph, in fact, was eagerly chanting “movie” (smoothie) as soon as he saw me take out the blender, then was sad when there were no seconds. My husband, however, thought that the taste of vanilla was a bit too much. I was mostly disappointed that it didn’t have the same texture as a Burgerville shake. I blame the ricecream. I think a coconut ice-cream would have given me more of a texture that I wanted, though the taste would be different. Still worth doing again.

I like the idea of coconut milk even though I can do dairy. I think it would give a nice flavor though with the coconut.

Great recipe for sharing! We made strawberry ice cream (dairy free) last night and there wasn’t a drop to put into the freezer when we were done! We had a recipe shared in our hop for a Chocolate Magic Shell and I made that to put over top. Soooo good! I believe I will try your Strawberry milkshake tonight for our evening snack ☺ Feel free to share to share in our hop as well this week. It is open until midnight tonight!
